“Rhythm Roulette” is Mass Appeal’s newest video series, it features today’s most prominent producers creating sample-based beats out of randomly selected records. In this first episode we feature Party Supplies, the Fool’s Gold producer/singer-songwriter responsible for Danny Brown’s “Grown Up” and Action Bronson’s Blue Chips mixtape.
The idea behind Rhythm Roulette is simple: take a producer to their local record shop, have them pick out a specific genre they’d like to choose from, blindfold them, and have them select three records. The producer then takes us to their lab, chops up some samples, drum breaks, etc., and creates a beat from the randomly selected records. In our inaugural episode Party Supplies crafts an instrumental from three randomly selected records from the funk and soul sections at Brooklyn’s Academy Records.
The outcome is a high energy manipulation of an old soul rendition of “Happy Birthday” that reminiscent of a Heatmakerz era Dipset banger.
Be on the look out for future episodes “Rhythm Roulette” and if you’re sleeping on Party Supplies go grab his project “Firecrackers” and his collaborative effort with Action Bronson, “Blue Chips.”
