The Essence of The Park Jam & a recap of Freestyle Session Denver, 2015

Hip hop was born in an apartment building in the Bronx, but it grew up in New York City’s parks. In the 1970s and ’80s, DJs would steal electricity from street lamps to power their speakers, plug in two turntables and a microphone, and throw a jam. Amateur rappers gathered for freestyle sessions in parks, most famously Manhattan’s Union Square. B-Boys would bust concrete sessions until the sun set. The essence of living in a dense urban area is trading private space for public space. City-dwellers don’t have sprawling suburban lawns, or often even a backyard. But they do have access to great public and semi-public places: sidewalks, stoops, and, most importantly, parks. Parks are also where people without big houses, and people who are too young or too poor to gather in bars, go to party. And hip hop is party music, invented by DJs and MCs mixing records and making up rhymes to entertain the crowd.

As Hip-Hop culture has made it's impact around the world. The essence of the park jam, or a bboy jam in any regards has continued to unite people and carry on the traditions of Peace,Love,Unity, and Having Fun. Having been very blessed throughout the years to be able to be involved and host The Freestyle Session Denver, with the rest of the LOF crew. It's a constance reminder of why I fell in Love with this culture.

The Mile High City was pumping with B-Boy energy this plast weekend! Dancers from coast to coast, show up and showed out, and show the rest what they were all about! From The Bronx,Brooklyn,Boston,Texas,Arizona, California,Chicago,Colorado Springs and back to Denver, Hip-Hop heads were out in full force reppin with their crew @ Beta Night Club in Denver! With a league of legendary judges:B-Boy House (FSC) BBoy Float (Incredible Breakers) B-Boy Wicked (PHAZEII). I was on the microphone for most of the day, giving and exchanging energies with my fellow hip-hoppa's. Hanging out in the circles, watching,speaking,listening to my comrades share their gifts and arts with each other, was a beautiful thing. For a brief moment in time, we put all the noise and drama from the world aside, and allowed our creativeness to collide and have a good time in the cypher. It's was nice to see my people, dancing, and being stress free, doin' what they loved to do!
